Solstice on the Merrimack: Making the Most of Newburyport’s Longest Days
If April is when the harbor wakes up, June is when it truly shines. This is the month of the long light, where the sun doesn’t set until well after 8:00 PM, and the salt air carries the scent of blooming rugosa roses and tidal marshes.
At Cutwater Inn and Suites, we see June as the perfect bridge between the quiet of spring and the high energy of mid-summer. It is a time for garden tours, sunset cruises, and the first taste of local harvest. Here is how to navigate the city's best this June.
The Peak of the Bloom: Gardens and Greenery
June in Newburyport is defined by its colors. This year marks the 47th Annual Old Newbury Garden Tour (June 13–14). The 2026 theme, "250 Years of Growth," is a nod to the American garden's evolution. It’s a rare chance to step behind the brick walls of High Street’s historic estates and see urban pocket gardens that have been tended for generations.
If you prefer your nature a bit more wild, Maudslay State Park is a must-visit this month. The park’s legendary stands of mountain laurel and rhododendrons hit their peak in early June, creating "tunnels" of white and pink blooms that feel like something out of a storybook.
On the Water: Beyond the Harbor
While the kayak season is in full swing, June is when the larger vessels take center stage.
Whale Watching: June is prime time for sightings at Stellwagen Bank. Boats depart right from downtown, just a short walk from your suite.
Sunset Cocktail Cruises: For a more relaxed pace, the Yankee Clipper offers evening tours. There is no better way to see the city’s skyline and our clipper ship-inspired architecture than from the middle of the Merrimack at dusk.
A Taste of June: Strawberries and Markets
You can’t talk about June on the North Shore without mentioning strawberries. Cider Hill Farm (just 10 minutes away in Amesbury) hosts its Strawberry Festival over the weekends of June 13–14 and 20–21. Expect live music, hard cider, and the chance to pick your own berries straight from the field.
Back in town, the Newburyport Farmers Market hits its stride in June (look for market days on June 14 and 28). It’s held at the Tannery Marketplace, where you can grab artisanal cheeses, local honey, and fresh-cut flowers to brighten up your suite.
